I don't think he had some powered up Super Saiyan 2 in the anime. It's certainly not implied at least. As I've established, anger isn't something a person can control. Anger merely pushed Vegeta to become stronger. Vegeta also seemed surprised that Trunks could amplify the power of Super Saiyan 2 in the manga, so I'd argue it's rather unlikely that he could. I mean, there's only so many ways you can justify Vegeta being as strong as he is though, and his SSJ2 undoubtedly comes out as much stronger than everyone else's, but nobody seems to comment on how much stronger he is in Base.

I mean, even if Vegeta learned how to amplify Super Saiyan 2 within those few hours, there's no reason his Super Saiyan 2 should be this much greater than his, especially since Trunks is a half breed and therefore should have more potential.
